Meet Rip, enduring there on the run leg with the relaxed stride.

Rip is a former pro triathlete and firefighter turned plant-based health advocate. He followed in the footsteps of his father, Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn, who, in 1985, began extensive research on the health benefits of a plant-based diet for patients with severe cardiovascular disease at the now-famous Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.

Dr. Esselstyn prescribed his patients a plant-based diet free of animal products and refined foods, and all who followed the diet got better. Chest pains subsided as blood vessels opened up to let blood flow free again and nourish the heart. You know what else flowed free? The people. They could walk again, and re-experience the world in wonder.

So, we ourselves begin to wonder when the world will know the work of Rip and his dad? When will we reimagine reality to heal people with plant foods and care for animals and the planet like kin?

Throughout history, many cultures have thrived on these diets rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains: The Papua New Guinea Highlanders. The Rastafarians of Jamaica. People from Rural China, Africa, and Okinawa. The Jains, from India, who walk with purpose upon the earth to avoid harming living things, and the Tamahumara Indians of Northern Mexico, who describe running in their culture as “a way of life.”

Anyone wanna be a Ruby-crowned Kinglet for Halloween? This tiny songbird with the darling eyes and fine scarlet mohawk can be found flitting about in the forest looking for little bugs and spiders. Keep an eye out for him this Saturday as we dodge cobwebs along the Banks-Vernonia Trail during our spooky Halloween costume ride to the creepy town of Banks. Thank the good Goblins ride leader Shelly C. is bringing us hot chocolate for a splash of homemade comfort in the dark woods!

Next time you’re riding or running along Marine Drive, pop into Broughton Beach and check out the colorful decorations on the friendly wood pillars we like to call “the teeth.” This #natureart was installed by the Broughton Beach Ballenas (cold water swim team), and will be monitored daily to ensure the Columbia River is kept clean and free of yarn.

If you’re interested in safely exploring the intrepid wonders of cold water, the Ballenas——who intentionally support @columbiariverkeeper as they work closely with Northwest Indigenous tribes to protect the river——are offering a free talk TONIGHT on “How to Start Your Own Cold Water Swim Group.” It will be informative and fun, and if you come, it might just lead to something magical...
