Check out that colorful crew on bike aid station duty at Best in the West!

We set up camp on the South Santiam in ample time to cheer on the first riders rolling through. For the next few hours, we kept folks fueled and hydrated, pumped tires, made makeshift raincoats, gave a pain med, guarded and inspected nice bikes (stamped with @outputspeedlab stickers), and supported our very own TTPDX athletes Morgan and Karen as they took on the 70.3 and Olympic distance races.

It was a beautiful day, with a backdrop of pattering rain on our canopy top. When it came time to go, we left our spot on the South Santiam cleaner than before, so perhaps the soil there will grow wildflowers.

Thank you, @bestinthewestevents, for helping us recreate safely in the lovely land of Sweet Home. We will be back again, as always!

Here we are in sweet, Sweet Home, gearing up for a weekend of fun at Best in the West Triathlon Festival! Camping, racing, and volunteering at BiW are longtime Tri Team PDX traditions, and after years of practice crafting the best darn bike aid station in the land, we’re aiming for a 100% rider catch rate on our water bottle handoffs this year——ensuring all racers stay hydrated on course. Look out for our colorful crew cheering loudly on Pleasant Valley Road as you bike by!

And, speaking of conspicuous creatures, you might just find some others ruffling around in the brush at Lewis Creek Park, just before the little bridge to the finish line.

Go get ‘em tiggers, but remember——slow and steady wins the race!

In fondness and sorrow, we remember the beautiful life of our friend and teammate, Chris Farmer, who passed away tragically while swimming at Hagg lake on Tuesday, August 31st, 2021. We are thankful he was with friends at the time of his passing.

Chris loved to swim, bike, run, race, volunteer, organize team events, plan athletic fundraisers for mental health awareness and cancer research, and share uplifting spiritual messages with teammates and friends. He was a beacon of light for many during dusky times. We will remember him for his generosity, his gentle spirit, and his infectious grin that got everyone grinning along with him——or flat out laughing hard.

Gosh, Chris, we miss you. You had so much more to share. How lucky we were to know you. We will always keep you dear in our hearts.

As swimmers and triathletes, we share our precious training waters with wild creatures like Sockeye Salmon, who thrive in the cold. With water temperatures rising above 68 degrees during heat waves, these fish become lethargic and develop lesions and fungus on their bodies. Their journeys become painful, and sadly, many of them have already died in these conditions.

Consider checking out @columbiariverkeeper to see how you can help our fragile ecosystem regain some balance. Your actions can, and will, inspire change. After all, salmon inspire us to “swim like fish,” and can you figure out just how many of our common idioms are inspired by birds? It might lead you on a wild goose chase.

Folks, let’s get our ducks in a row. If we spend time taking care of nature, we will, in turn, take care of each other.

It is with a sad heart we inform you of the passing of original teammate, Carly Van Aart. Her dedication, love, and support of all things triathlon, TNT, TTPDX, and anything that involved water will be sorely missed. Her battle with cancer had taken several turns; however, ended on Saturday June 5th, 2021.

We know that everyone who has been influenced, coached, or talked into a race by her is at a loss.

We bet her wish for us all will be to remember her by putting on our swim/wet suits and doing a few laps for her.

We love you Carly, and are grateful for all you did for us.
